Lagos NURTW official arrested for beating dispatch rider to death

Shamsideen Adio

The Lagos State Police Command has arrested a member of the National Union of Road Transport Workers (NURTW), Shamsideen Adio, for allegedly beating a dispatch rider to death on Tapa Street, Lagos Island.

The incident, which occurred on Wednesday, reportedly began after a minor dispute when the dispatch rider allegedly scratched Adio’s vehicle. Eyewitnesses said the altercation quickly escalated as Adio, joined by his colleagues, descended on the rider and beat him mercilessly.

“He was battered as they liked. Adio is notorious for violence. Just days ago, he reportedly assaulted a tricycle operator who had to be rushed to the general hospital,” one witness told reporters.

A police officer in the area confirmed that the dispatch rider later died from the injuries sustained in the attack.

“The victim died from the injuries and the suspect has been arrested. He is now in custody at the State Criminal Investigation Department,” the officer said.

As of press time, the Lagos State Police Public Relations Officer, Abimbola Adebisi, had yet to issue an official statement on the matter.
